Max Verstappen: “It Will Be Quite Tricky” to Challenge the Leaders at Chinese GP

Max Verstappen admitted that fighting from fourth place in tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix will be a tough challenge. After today’s qualifying session, the Red Bull driver explained that the task ahead is difficult, especially when starting behind strong competitors.

Qualifying Recap
Verstappen qualified fourth in Shanghai. He is behind first-time pole-sitter Oscar Piastri’s McLaren, George Russell’s Mercedes, and Lando Norris in the second McLaren. Despite finishing third in the morning Sprint race, Verstappen’s pace dropped in the later stages due to heavy tyre degradation. His best lap in qualifying was 1m 30.817s—a slight improvement of only 0.05 seconds compared to his time 24 hours earlier when he had been second fastest to Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari.

Verstappen’s Cautious Optimism
Commenting on his performance, Verstappen said, “Yeah, we made some changes and I think they were potentially positive for tomorrow. But if it is going to be enough to actually put up a fight to the cars ahead, I think it will be quite tricky.” His words highlight both his confidence in the improvements and his realistic view of the challenges ahead.

Team Strategy and Challenges
Red Bull faces additional hurdles compared to teams like McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari, which have both drivers finishing in the top eight. With Liam Lawson being the slowest in qualifying, Red Bull may not be able to rely on team strategy as much as its rivals. Verstappen also mentioned the difficulty of finding a consistent grip, which affected his ability to set references on the circuit.

As Shanghai prepares for tomorrow’s race, Verstappen’s measured outlook reminds us that even small differences in performance can have a big impact on the outcome.
